Ben Jacobs’ new column for GiveMeSport is producing lots of interesting content about what goes on at Chelsea, and this week is no different.
The focus this time around is on Estevao Willian, a player not yet at the club, but one with a huge amount of excitement building around him. The Blues swooped early to sign the 17 year old, and his reputation has only grown since. Still just a kid, the £51m potential deal we’ve agreed for him is somehow already looking cheap.
Given his tender years – he’ll only just be 18 when he arrives at Stamford Bridge next summer – a loan move might seem the natural path. But according to Jacobs, that’s not the plan.
Andre Cury, Estevao’s agent whom we’re already pretty familiar with given his propensity to speak publicly, has apparently secured guaranteed of first team action from the moment his client arrives:
“GMS sources have been informed that Estevao’s agent Andre Cury insisted on securing first-team assurances during discussions with Chelsea after seeing fellow client Vitor Roque struggle for action at La Liga heavyweights Barcelona prior to being shipped out on loan to domestic rivals Real Betis.”
Given how good Estevao looks, that shouldn’t be a problem.
Estevao Willian scores another goal.
It will of course make the traffic jam in Chelsea’s attack that much more intense. There are already a number of talented young players competing for minutes – adding Estevao and fellow future arrival Kendry Paez into the mix is going to make things even trickier to balance.
There’s also a claim that Estevao “made it clear… he wants to be deployed in the No.10 role.”
That would create problems of its own, given Cole Palmer is the team’s star player and currently occupying that position.
It will be very interesting to see how this all shakes out.
