Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim might have a new role in mind for Luke Shaw based on the club’s transfer plans for next summer.
The 30-year-old is the club’s longest-serving player, having first arrived at Carrington in the summer of 2014 after making the switch from Southampton.
Shaw has long been considered one of the finest left-backs in the country, but Ruben Amorim is currently deploying him as a left centre-back. With Lisandro Martinez yet to make his return from an ACL injury he suffered in February, the Englishman has cemented himself as a regular starter.
However, the Man Utd stalwart might not linger in the three-man backline in the long run.
During his appearance on the Talk of the Devils podcast, Man United expert Andy Mitten revealed that the club doesn’t consider signing a new left wing-back a priority for next summer.
On the contrary, Mitten believes that INEOS are determined to buy one or two new midfielders, in addition to a defender.
With a new centre-back at Carrington and Lisandro returning from his long-term layoff, Shaw will find limited space at the back, especially if the club maintains the services of Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro, as expected, as well as locking down Harry Maguire to a new deal.
Nevertheless, Shaw might be able to compete for the left wing-back spot, a role he’s more accustomed to, especially during Gareth Southgate’s reign with the English national team.

United addressed this particular role by signing Patrick Dorgu last January, but the Dane remains a work in progress. The youngster hasn’t been able to lock down a starting role just yet, as Amorim has been preferring his compatriot Diogo Dalot, although this could change following the latter’s woeful showing against Forest.
The versatile Noussair Mazraoui could fill in on the left side if necessary, albeit it’s not exactly his natural habitat, while Tyrell Malacia already has one foot out the door, despite his recent reinstatement. Moreover, Diego Leon and Harry Amass might be too green to vie for a prominent role at this early stage of their careers.
Therefore, Shaw represents a natural, reliable, and experienced profile for the left wing-back role, if United opt against recruiting a new profile.
Last season, Amorim had already hailed the London native as a ‘world-class’ player, and although this sounded like exaggerated flattery, the evidence suggests that the 40-year-old has been willing to trust the Englishman with a starting role, even in unfamiliar territory.
