Arthur Masuaku is already thinking about the intercontinental playoffs for qualification to the 2026 World Cup. DR Congo has a golden opportunity to make history.
After clinching the African playoffs by defeating Nigeria in the final (1-1, 4-3 on penalties), DRC will need to overcome the winner between Jamaica and New Caledonia on March 31, 2026 in Mexico to secure their place at next summer's global showcase.
Arthur Masuaku is well aware of the challenge ahead, as he told the press. Asked about the playoff, he replied: "Of course I'm thinking about it. This is definitely the match for us. I'm talking about the Congolese people. The most important match, I'd say, maybe in our history, because it's been over 50 years since we last played at the World Cup."
The Lens player added: "There's one more step to go and we can't afford to slip up. If we manage to beat Jamaica and New Caledonia, I think we can change the country's history in some way. This is a country at war, let's not forget, and if we can bring smiles and hope back to our people, it would be wonderful."
"We know that our group in Congo, we are, let's say, the flagbearers. The people see themselves in the image we represent. I truly hope with all my heart that we win this match, to bring joy back to our people and to be able to play in the World Cup," he concluded.
DRC's only World Cup appearance dates back to the 1974 edition in Germany, when the country competed as Zaire.
