According to Le Progres, some countries, including France, are concerned that FIFA’s 2026 World Cup prize money will not match spiralling organisational and travel costs, raising the prospect of losses for national federations.
The tournament begins in 100 days across the United States, Mexico and Canada, from 11 June to 19 July. Forty-eight teams will compete, with Argentina defending the title won in Qatar four years ago.
FIFA’s total pot stands at $727 million, more than €600 million. Although the fund has increased, the per-team share is broadly similar because the field has grown from 32 to 48. Of each payment the FFF allocates 30 per cent to players, while organisational and travel costs will be significantly higher than in Qatar.
FFF president Philippe Diallo has said France would lose money if it were eliminated in the quarter-finals, or even the semi-finals. Several European federations would be prepared to ask FIFA for a higher allocation.
For comparison, Chelsea earned more than €110 million for winning the most recent Club World Cup, more than double what July’s World Cup winners will receive. The 2026 champions will take $50 million, with $9 million paid to teams finishing 33rd to 48th.
