The participation of the Iranian national team in the 2026 World Cup remains uncertain, following several reports suggesting the possibility of their withdrawal from the tournament due to regional tensions and recent attacks targeting Tehran.
The final stage of the 2026 World Cup will be held this summer in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The draw placed Iran in Group G, alongside Egypt, Belgium, and New Zealand.
According to Spanish daily AS, the Iraqi national team is among the frontrunners to replace Iran if they withdraw. Iraq is one of the Asian teams involved in the continental playoffs for World Cup qualification.
The same source reports that, should this withdrawal be confirmed, world football’s governing body, FIFA, will have to make a decision. Several scenarios are on the table: Iraq could be given the spot directly, the playoff matches could be reorganised, or another team could be selected based on the qualifying rankings.
In this context, Mehdi Taj, president of the Iranian Football Federation, responded to speculation surrounding his country’s World Cup participation, stressing that no final decision has been made yet.
In a statement to Iranian television, he said: “After the attack our country suffered, it is difficult to approach the World Cup with the usual enthusiasm. However, the final decision rests with the relevant sporting authorities.”
