A new red sea slug species has been named after Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha in recognition of his World Cup performances.
According to L'Équipe, the designation nods to Cape Verde’s surprise 0-0 draw with Spain on matchday one.
Cape Verde were later knocked out by Argentina in the last 32, yet the keeper’s profile has continued to grow.
Biologist Jesus Ortea identified a previously unrecorded species in the Caribbean Sea, near Guadeloupe and Havana, the capital of Cuba, and named it Aldisa vozinhai in his book Historias de la Bioadversidad. His research coincided with the tournament.
Vozinha emerged as one of this World Cup’s standout revelations, particularly in matches against Spain and Argentina.
Ortea described the tribute as a way to thank the people of the small African island, who received the Environmental Merit Medal in 2023 for contributions to the study of the archipelago’s marine biodiversity.
