As per a Football League World exclusive, several clubs in the EFL are monitoring Alan Browne's situation at Sunderland with a view to a potential move this summer.
The 30-year-old midfielder joined Sunderland last summer from Preston North End, and started just 13 games this past season - and could find his playing time limited further with the Black Cat's promotion to the Premier League.
Sunderland have already completed the permanent signing of French midfielder Enzo Le Fee from Roma for £19.3m following his successful loan spell - which could push Browne further down the pecking order if more signings follow suit.
FLW's Mackem Fan Pundit, Jack Austwicke, has admitted he wouldn't be overly concerned if the Republic of Ireland international were to depart the Stadium of Light in the coming months.
"I honestly wouldn’t mind letting Browne go at this point, he’s never played a minute of Premier League football, I don’t think," Austwicke told FLW.
"He’s been a useful player because he filled in at right back a few times when we needed him to, and he was impressive there. In midfield, he was a good, good presence.
"Now we’ve let Jobe go by the looks of it and are probably going to replace that with a big signing, a big name hopefully - which we need to do with the money we’re going to get.
"Browne might struggle to get in and around the squad. I think we’ll sign a couple more as well, so I wouldn’t be too bothered if he was let go, but I’d like to see him because I think he’s a good presence around the club, a good character and obviously quite a good footballer as well.
"It wouldn’t be a terrible thing to keep him on, but I wouldn't be too disheartened if he was let go."
With Browne reportedly earning £15k per week, according to Capology estimates, Sunderland may view this as an opportunity to remove a solid Championship player from their wage bill - and recruit a player with solid top-flight experience.
The midfielder's versatility has been valuable - as noted by Austwicke - with Browne capable of playing right back and left midfield, along with his preferred central or defensive midfield position.
Not having any Premier League experience in a career spanning 455 total appearances - Browne may indeed struggle to feature even on the substitutes' bench under Regis Le Bris next season - so making a move back to the Championship is perhaps the most sensible option if the price is right.
