Wrexham are aiming to complete the signing of Manchester City defender Callum Doyle ahead of Sheffield United and Rangers.

According to The Athletic, Phil Parkinson and Co. have agreed to pay £8 million for the 21-year-old amid competition from the likes of Rangers and Sheffield United.

Doyle reportedly took geographical location into account when making a decision, with his current base of Manchester playing into the Red Dragons’ hands.

The defender has spent time on loan with Norwich City, Coventry City, Leicester City and Sunderland, but is now set for a permanent switch.

Football League World’s Wrexham fan pundit, Liam Grice, would be thrilled to see the Welsh outfit acquire Doyle’s services.

“I can't quite believe it to be honest,” stated Liam.

“He's arguably a lower-end Premier League player right now, so to be signing for us is a real statement of intent from Parkinson and the owners.

“The fee is reportedly £8 million. I've seen City fans say he's worth a lot more than that, so it seems like a good piece of business even for that.

"That big of a transfer fee and beating clubs like Sheffield United and Rangers to his signing just proves that we do have a bit of pull, a bit of influence over the transfer market and that's really nice to see.

“Doyle will cover a position I think we do need to strengthen, which is that left side of centre-back. Lewis Brunt is amazing, but you can tell he's a bit too one-footed to be playing that role.

“A lot of the goals we’ve conceded have come down the left-hand side so far this season, so hopefully he can come in straight away, address that issue and really be a key player for us from the off.

“Who knows, maybe in a couple of years we can sell him for an even bigger fee than £8 million pounds.”

Callum Doyle will raise the level of Wrexham

Wrexham have been somewhat overshadowed this summer by Birmingham City, due to the latter’s outrageous activity in the transfer market.

However, the Red Dragons have still spent handsomely and with players such as Josh Windass, Lewis O’Brien and Nathan Broadhead, they will no doubt be aiming to compete higher up the Championship.

Despite this, Wrexham have lost their opening two games of the 2025/26 Championship campaign, shipping five goals across 180 minutes of football.

Crucially, however, both of those defeats to Southampton and West Brom respectively have been by a single goal (2-1 and 3-2), therefore highlighting just how big of a boost installing a defender of Doyle's quality could be.
