Wrexham face backlash after unveiling leisurewear with a white dragon crest, a colour that in Welsh mythology is tied to England rather than Wales.
According to NY Times, the reaction to an image of striker Sam Smith modelling a jacket sparked complaints online, with supporters arguing the Welsh dragon should be red.
The furore arrived on the same day Phil Parkinson’s side opened pre-season with a 0-0 draw against Wisla Krakow in Poland and revealed a dark grey away shirt inspired by North Wales’ slate quarries. The badge on that shirt also appears in white, a decision linked to the base colour, and early sales were strong.
Cadw’s well-known tale sets a native red dragon against a white dragon associated with Anglo-Saxons, ending with the red’s victory. That history helps explain why some fans saw the white emblem as an own goal.
Others noted the club have used white dragons before on darker items, including the popular black away kit from 2024-25 and a promotion-celebration range, while the co-owners have regularly championed Welsh culture and were honoured with the Dragon Award in 2022.
The Wrexham Supporters Trust has also deployed a white dragon on banners and polo shirts for clarity, though its chairman Barry Jones says he prefers a red badge on kits. The club have not commented, and sales will ultimately decide the fate of the jacket.
