Wrexham are attempting to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, with permanent and loan routes under discussion, according to Alan Nixon. The academy graduate could be available for around £7m.
Wrexham may pay a fee but prefer either a straight loan or an initial loan that includes an option or obligation to buy.
Patterson is expected to leave the Stadium of Light this summer after falling behind Robin Roefs in the goalkeeping pecking order. The 26-year-old has returned to the Academy of Light and is training with the senior group while his future is resolved.
Millwall want him back after a productive loan across the second half of last season. They recruited him in February after he had been limited to one senior appearance for Sunderland in the opening months.
The report added that Sunderland’s valuation had discouraged Rangers from advancing talks. Wolverhampton Wanderers have also considered him but would need to move a goalkeeper on before making an approach.
After an EFL Trophy debut at Fleetwood in November 2020, he was loaned to Notts County in 2021-22, then recalled and made first choice for the run-in. He played the League One play-offs as Sunderland beat Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley to end a four-year third-tier stay.
Three years later he made two key saves against Sheffield United at Wembley before Régis Le Bris’ side came from behind to win 2-1 and go up to the Premier League. Roefs’ emergence curtailed his minutes last season, prompting a Millwall loan.
