Xabi Alonso has agreed a deal to become Real Madrid’s head coach, with the Spaniard set to sign an initial three-year contract.
Alonso will succeed Carlo Ancelotti at the Spanish side, having made the decision to leave Bayer Leverkusen at the conclusion of the Bundesliga campaign.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that an agreement between Real Madrid and Alonso has been reached. It includes the finalisation of his coaching staff at the Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid plan for Alonso to lead the side at this summer’s Club World Cup.
Alonso arrives at Real Madrid, where he made 236 appearances during his playing career, as one of Europe’s most coveted coaches. The 43-year-old led Bayer Leverkusen to a maiden Bundesliga title last season, as part of a German domestic double.
Leverkusen became the first team in German football history to win the Bundesliga without losing a single game. During the campaign, Leverkusen set a new record of 51 games in all competitions without defeat, the longest in European football history since the advent of UEFA competitions.
Alonso will replace Carlo Ancelotti after a disappointing campaign for Real Madrid. Sunday’s defeat at Barcelona leaves Los Blancos seven points behind the Catalans with just three games to go. Real Madrid also lost the Copa del Rey final to Barcelona and exited the Champions League at the quarter-final stage, losing 5-1 on aggregate to Arsenal.
Ancelotti is expected to take up a role with the Brazil national team. The record five-time Champions League winners will aim to lead the Selecao to World Cup success in 2026.
