Xabi Alonso declined to discuss Chelsea’s unsuccessful attempt to sign Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka. He was asked about the midfielder after Chelsea’s move collapsed.

Sunderland Echo reports that Chelsea explored a deal for the Switzerland international. Xhaka was understood to be tempted by the chance to work with Alonso again after their successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen.

Sunderland maintained throughout that their captain was not for sale and they rejected efforts to negotiate. Xhaka only joined last summer in a package worth up to around £17 million, and he is seen as central to Régis Le Bris’ squad ahead of the club’s European return.

While initially open to discussions, Xhaka later reaffirmed his commitment following talks with the club. The prospect of captaining Sunderland in Europe, along with the longer-term ambitions, shaped his decision to stay at the Stadium of Light.

Alonso offered little further detail, saying: “Granit Xhaka? No comment on players who are not here with us.” Sunderland now consider the matter closed as Xhaka prepares to lead Le Bris’ side into the 2026/27 campaign.
