Xabi Alonso reacts to Real Madrid job speculation amid rising rumours | OneFootball

With the reports earlier today that Carlo Ancelotti has made the decision to step down from the Real Madrid job at the end of the season, talk was always going to quickly switch to the topic of who might replace him.

Attention was quickly placed on Xabi Alonso, the Bayer Leverkusen coach who has long been linked with a move to Real Madrid and has been identified as the favourite for the job.

As per Diario Sport, the Basque manager spoke out today on the rumours as part of his press conference ahead of his side’s clash against Real Madrid’s fierce rivals Atlético.

On the questions about his links to Real Madrid, Alonso said “I haven’t prepared for them, they don’t bother me, nor do they surprise me. I’m only thinking about Atlético, that’s what I’ve prepared for and I have done so thoroughly.”

On the rumours about him being the favourite for the job, Alonso was very hesitant in his response. He simply said that he can’t say anything and that he is fully focused on the current season with Bayer Leverkusen.

He did however speak about his love for Real Madrid, saying “Over the years, time goes by, but the love lasts and that relationship is unforgettable.“

The key takeaway from this press conference is what was not said rather than what was. Xabi Alonso refused to rule out a future in the Spanish capital and that will have Real Madrid fans excited.
