According to Foot Sur 7, Sunderland and Marseille are vying to sign Charleroi and Algeria midfielder Yassine Titraoui. Marseille sporting director Gregory Lorenzi is said to be leading talks, and the 22-year-old is thought to favour a move to Wearside, with a fee of £7m to £10.5m suggested.
Sunderland are shaping a pivotal summer as Regis Le Bris readies his squad for a Europa League campaign. The Black Cats will play in Europe for only the second time after last weekend's home win against Chelsea sealed seventh in their first season back in the Premier League.
Titraoui has scored seven goals and supplied five assists in 74 appearances for Charleroi across the last two seasons. He has been capped five times by Algeria.
Le Bris said the window will be important because recruitment can shape the season, and that mistakes are hard to avoid when players move into new environments. He believes the club's structure has improved, with more people and tools to scan a wider market, and added they will see what happens this summer.
While reinforcements are expected to build on firm foundations, it appears unlikely the volume of business will match last summer's activity.
