Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim admitted Alejandro Garnacho didn’t enjoy his best match against Nottingham Forest, but still picked up some positive aspects from his display.

The Red Devils returned defeated from their trip to Nottingham, as Anthony Elanga punished his old employers with a shocking 85-meter solo run before slotting his shot past Andre Onana.

The winger’s fifth-minute strike teased an entertaining affair, but it proved to be the solitary goal of the contest, as Forest were happy to absorb Man Utd’s pressure for the rest of the contest, while Amorim’s men couldn’t produce much in the final third.

Although he remained on the pitch for the duration of the contest, Garnacho struggled to make his presence felt. The Argentinian youngster looked dejected at the final whistle, perhaps realising he should have done more.

After the contest, Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst blasted Garnacho’s ‘naive’ display, especially after kicking the ball away, which earned him a free yellow card. Hence, Luckhurst gave the winger a 4/10 grade, the lowest on the night.

For his part, Amorim admitted Garnacho had many things wrong in the final third, but still defended him for trying his best and tracking back to support his teammates in the defensive phase.

“He is making everything. He’s trying. Sometimes you have one day that you are doing the right things, but in the final third, you are not that good, can happen,” said the 40-year-old in his post-match interview.

“The most important thing for me is that when he needs to run back, he is running back,” concluded the manager.

Garnacho was a favourite at Erik ten Hag’s court over the past two campaigns, but he hasn’t always delivered the goods under Amorim. The Portuguese tactician had dropped him to the bench earlier the campaign, but Amad Diallo’s injury helped him regain a starting spot.

The 20-year-old has been constantly linked with a summer exit, as Napoli are reportedly keen to sign him.
