Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez has insisted that the Premier League title race is far from over despite Arsenal’s healthy lead at the top of the division.

The Blues are six points adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford, where nothing less than three points will do for Pep Guardiola and co.

City have picked themselves up in the last week with back-to-back cup wins over Exeter City and Newcastle United with a combined score of 12-1, having put 10 past the former at the weekend in the FA Cup third-round at the weekend.

Guardiola’s side also saw off Newcastle in the opening leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie at St. James’ Park on Tuesday night as goals from man-of-the-moment Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki helped put City in pole position to book a return to Wembley in March.

However, the Premier League remains the big deal for Manchester City, who despite their seriousness towards cup competitions will want to usurp league leaders Arsenal in the second half of the season – as they have done on several occasions over the years.

Nico Gonzalez will be instrumental for City’s title run-in and having established himself as a capable member of the senior squad during Rodri’s absence this season, the 23-year-old Spain international has reflected on his progress at the Etihad Stadium since arriving from Porto in January 2025.

“It’s not easy because sometimes you feel tired but I really like it! I’m loving it,” Gonzalez said in conversation with Sky Sports, showcasing a positive side to City’s relentless schedule.

“I’m still young so I can handle it. But I think being tough doesn’t mean you don’t enjoy it and I’m enjoying it a lot! I like to suffer also, to have to play and overcome these difficulties.”

Giving his two cents on the title race with Arsenal, the Barcelona academy graduate added: “Looking at the title race in the Premier League – the title race is not done. You can see it from so many years what’s happened and in this league, you never know – in two, three games, everything can change.

“We’ve seen Liverpool drop points when they were top. We were so close, now we draw three. Any team can win any team, that’s the best thing about this league. You go into every game knowing anything can happen.

“I’ve won two trophies in my career, both felt so good! And I miss it, I’m going to be honest, I miss it so much. Last season we couldn’t win anything, we lost the FA Cup Final against Crystal Palace and it was frustrating. I still sometimes think about that game.”

Gonzalez was absent from Manchester City’s matchday squad in Newcastle on Tuesday night as Guardiola admitted that the midfielder was carrying ‘an incredible knock’ to raise doubts over the Spaniard’s availability against Manchester United at the weekend.
