Matt Law was at Villa Park to watch Chelsea’s loss to Aston Villa last week, and he noticed a lot of things about Cole Palmer’s frustration in the game:

“Cole had his big chance when he went through one on one with Emi Martinez,” Law explained on the London is Blue podcast.

“When he didn’t score he just sat on the floor, and Villa raced up the other end of the pitch. And I thought they were going to score. And Cole was just sat on the floor watching. And I’m not questioning his attitude because you can see he almost wants to do too much, so it’s not like a bad attitude from that perspective. But I just thought you can’t do that. You’ve got to get up, you’ve got to do something.”

You can see Law speaking in the clip embedded here:

Palmer’s anger at himself taken out on Nkunku

Cole Palmer’s pass to Christopher Nkunku.

As Law also noted the frustration at Christopher Nkunku which we did at the time:

“He flung his arm up at Nkunku at one point when he played a not particularly good pass in his direction and Nkunku got nowhere near it. Now I think he was flinging his arm both at himself, as a reaction to his own not very good pass, but also it felt like frustration coming out at Nkunku, who until the Southampton game hadn’t been doing very well. I don’t really like it, but I also get it, because he’s tried so hard and he’s carried the team so much.”

We totally agree. In this case, Palmer could have done better, but his anger at Nkunku was really an eruption of a few games’ worth of anger built up. But ultimately, Law backs our star man to get back to scoring form sooner rather than later:

“He will score soon. I would quite happily put a fiver on him to score against Leicester or Copenhagen.”
