Manchester City take on Huddersfield Town tomorrow night in a third-round Carabao Cup tie at the Accu Stadium. Pep Guardiola’s side has just come through three tough fixtures against Manchester United, Napoli and Arsenal. It is expected that Pep Guardiola will rest a host of key players for tomorrow night’s match. Given the injuries that City are currently dealing with, it is likely that several of Manchester City’s young and talented academy players will be given an opportunity to impress tomorrow night. Divine Mukasa and Stephen Mfuni are the prime candidates to feature prominently against Huddersfield Town.
Speaking during his pre-game press conference ahead of tomorrow night’s match, Pep Guardiola told the media that he will not be selecting the same starting eleven from Manchester City’s past three matches. He told the media that there is an opportunity for City’s academy players to play. Speaking on his lineup for Manchester City’s Carabao Cup tie against Huddersfield Town, Guardiola said: “Tomorrow we are not going to play the same starting XI as the last three games, that’s for sure. I said many times in the Carabao Cup, we respect this competition, because we won it four times, but the problem is arriving to it with no injuries, but we arrive with injuries. So it’s a chance for Academy players to play.”
Manchester City’s academy is full of talented young players eager for an opportunity to impress in the first team. It just isn’t easy for them to make that breakthrough. Pep Guardiola’s squad is packed with quality so the academy players have to serve an apprenticeship before first team opportunities arise. Divine Mukasa and Stephen Mfuni are currently treading that path. They have both been on the bench for Pep Guardiola’s side recently. This shows that they are close to making a breakthrough with Pep Guardiola’s side. It would also seem that an opportunity for both players to start has arisen.
Injuries to Omar Marmoush and Rayan Cherki should give Divine Mukasa the chance to make his first start for Manchester City tomorrow night. There is a spot for Mukasa to start against Huddersfield Town. Mukasa is a supremely talented attacking midfielder. Given the injuries to Cherki and Marmoush, plus the fact that Erling Haaland is likely to be rested tomorrow night, a spot in the City starting eleven seems to be there for Divine Mukasa. He has the talent to make an impact. It now remains to be seen if he is given that opportunity tomorrow night.
The same applies to Stephen Mfuni. Mfuni is a prototypical City defender. He is versatile enough to play across the back four. The young defender is also proficient on the ball and is an exceptional defender. He could start against Huddersfield Town tomorrow night. With several of Manchester City’s defenders needing a rest, Mfuni could also start at the Accu Stadium.
Manchester City’s young players should be given an opportunity to impress against Huddersfield Town. It would be a surprise if they weren’t. Divine Mukasa and Stephen Mfuni seem to be the two players ready to go.
