Yuri Alberto: Corinthians spirit, Fiel Torcida and Brazil dream

The forward Yuri Alberto gave a long interview to the segment “Abre Aspas” on the ge.globo portal, published this Friday, the 24th. In the conversation, the Corinthians striker talked about various topics, his routine of ups and downs at Parque São Jorge, his quest for emotional balance, and his ambitions for the future, including the desire to wear the Brazilian National Team jersey again.

The number 9 recognized the intensity of the Corinthians environment, marked by constant changes and challenges: “Yes, every week there's something new. I'm used to it, I've been through my worst moment here. These are things that strengthen us, you know? Of course, sometimes it's complicated, but we have to stay as focused as possible on what we can do on the field, because off it we can't change anything.”

Despite the ups and downs, Yuri Alberto claims he feels a special connection with Corinthians, similar to that experienced by former midfielder Renato Augusto. “It's the same feeling. Corinthians is very different. I've been through Santos, Inter. Even though the period was short, it's different. There's no way... Everyone who comes here can't help but be infected by this love”, he declared.

Yuri Alberto explained how he sees the duality between the affection received from the Fiel fans and the rivalry from opponents: “It's incredible that everyone hates Corinthians fans, right. Nobody likes Corinthians fans. So we're a thorn in everyone's side, a pebble in everyone's shoe”, adding that children are more receptive, regardless of the stadium where he plays: “There are many kids who aren't Corinthians fans but have an immense affection for me. That's very gratifying.”

The forward criticized the excessive pressure on social media, calling it “inhumane,” explaining that to preserve his mental health, he has been focusing on his family and girlfriend. Asked if he is romantic, he replied: “I am, one of the last (laughs)... I try hard. (…) I am always very grateful to God. I ask for all his protections, to keep me from all evil... These are my prayers, I ask for a lot of wisdom on the field so we can make the best decisions”, he declared.

At another moment, the striker spoke about his maturity as an athlete and how he deals with the pressure of having to score goals all the time for Corinthians: “There's no point in being anxious, because it won't help me at all. I have to be very calm, so that, at the right time, I can be calm to play a good game and help my team. With a goal or an assist. I know that, by playing a great game, the goal will be a consequence of the work.”

According to Yuri Alberto, the beginning of 2024 was a “humiliating” period for him, but he managed to overcome it, revealing self-care habits to face the pressure. “I do therapy. I'm always with my family and have my faith in God. A guy who shields me, without him and my family, it wouldn't be possible to be here today and live my best moment. […] And to have more time to fight and bring more titles to this crowd. I want to feel that taste of being a champion again”, he assured.

He also recalled the contract renewal signed this year, stating that a departure from Timão would only happen if it were beneficial to all parties. He also said that his current goal is more about returning to the Brazilian National Team, while playing for Corinthians, than playing in Europe again – Yuri played in Russia for Zenit in 2022.

“My big goal, besides winning titles with Corinthians, is to be called up to the National Team. I know that here I'll have this opportunity if I'm putting up good numbers and we're doing well in competitions. (…) Seeing Hugo being called up now, I think the doors are opening for us.”

Yuri Alberto acknowledged the competitiveness in his sector, mentioning names like João Pedro and Vitor Roque, and praised the diversity of styles of the forwards being tested. He also said that the injury he suffered might have hindered his presence in the latest call-ups, but he remains optimistic that he can be called up again.

“Of course, this injury might have hindered a bit, but I'm coming back very well. The last two games were very positive. And I do believe that this striker position is very open. (…) That I can make my numbers, that the goals can come more naturally so I can be close to a call-up.”
