Bryan Zaragoza’s adventure at Roma appears to have already come to an end.
Arrived in the January transfer window to offer unpredictability and pace, the Spanish winger quickly slipped to the bottom of Gian Piero Gasperini’s pecking order, effectively becoming a stand-in at the club.
Despite injuries, including that of Lorenzo Pellegrini, Zaragoza hasn’t been used since the match against Juventus on March 1st, having made six consecutive appearances in the last league games.
The former Celta Vigo player’s initial impact seemed encouraging, so much so that the coach praised him after his debut against Cagliari: “He has the right characteristics for us; we haven’t had anyone like him. He’s the classic player who becomes dangerous when given space, even in tight spaces, beating his man and causing havoc.”
However, after a start against Napoli, where he provided an assist for Malen, the relationship between coach and player has deteriorated. Gasperini has begun to regularly favor different players, such as the young Venturino or Stephan El Shaarawy, despite the latter’s contract expiring and his departure from the capital. On April 4th, the Giallorossi coach made no secret of his disappointment at the 2001-born player’s integration: “I expected more. He’s had some difficulties, but it’s not easy in January, and we hope that at the crucial moment he can bring what we thought and believe he can do.”
According to Il Corriere dello Sport, the main obstacle to his permanence is tactical indiscipline. Zaragoza has failed to assimilate the playing mechanics required by Gasperini, who, at this crucial stage of the season, prefers to rely on more disciplined players who are ready to cover the required areas of the pitch.
With just 57 minutes played in recent weeks and a technical failure now evident, Zaragoza is looking set to leave at the end of the season.
