Former Serie A and Chelsea star Gianfranco Zola admits English fans and media ‘can’t understand’ why Manchester United sold Scott McTominay to Napoli last summer: ‘They haven’t digested it.’
The Scotland international joined the Partenopei in a €30m deal last summer and has already scored twice and provided as many assists in nine Serie A appearances under Antonio Conte.
The Italian tactician has even switched to a four-man defence to give McTominay playing time in central midfield.
“He is among the best signings of the last summer,” Zola told Corriere dello Sport.

“Here in England, they can’t understand how Man United could let him go. Perhaps it was a decision tied to the Financial Fair Play, but they haven’t digested it.”
McTominay suffered a minor ankle injury while on Scotland international duty earlier this week but is still expected to start for the Partenopei against Roma on Sunday.
“There’s rivalry, so I expect a significant challenge. Everyone risks. It will be tough, but Napoli seem the favourite,” said Zola.
During the international break, the Giallorossi have hired their third coach this season, calling Claudio Ranieri back to the club.
“It was the best choice. He knows the club well and can bring experience and serenity, which are fundamental right now,” argued Zola, who scored 49 goals in 186 matches under the Italian tactician at Napoli at Chelsea.
“With all due respect, De Rossi’s sacking surprised everyone,” continued Magic Box.
“Juric is a good coach, but he needed time and some specific players. Those were unusual decisions; I won’t say more.”
Napoli are the current Serie A leaders with 26 points in 12 games. Roma only have 13 in the 12th spot.
