Kaiserslautern enter 2026/27 intent on converting promise into a promotion bid, yet consistency questions persist. According to BuLi News, Torsten Lieberknecht starts a second full season.
FCK finished sixth with 52 points and 16 wins, but seldom among the frontrunners. They ended 10 points behind play-off winners Paderborn, hampered by away form and lapses.
Lieberknecht, promoted with Darmstadt in 2023, must tighten the defence, extract more from set pieces and raise road standards. He is likely to stick with 3-4-2-1 alongside a refreshed backroom team.
Recruitment has leaned young. Thierry Tazemeta arrives from Dortmund’s academy, Ibrahim Kanaté on loan from Anderlecht, plus Jan Elvedi, Kelven Frees and Ivan Knežević, while Paul Joly’s loan became permanent.
Up front, Erencan Yardımcı joins on loan as Ivan Prtajin recovers, and Mërgim Berisha needs a lift. Exits include Daniel Hanslik, Luca Sirch, Florian Kleinhansl, Faride Alidou and Mahir Emreli.
Pre-season brought two 17-0 tune-ups, a 5-3 over Sandhausen, a 4-1 defeat to Mainz and a 0-0 with Südtirol. A 3-1 win against Metz featured goals from Naatan Skyttä, Berisha and Semih Şahin.
The Metz selection hints at the opener, with Julian Krahl behind Elvedi, Maxwell Gyamfi and Jacob Rasmussen, Asta and Haas at wing-back, Kunze and Şahin central, Skyttä and captain Marlon Ritter behind Berisha.
They visit Wolfsburg then host Karlsruhe before a DFB-Pokal tie at Waldhof Mannheim, followed by St. Pauli, Darmstadt and Magdeburg. With nearly 34,000 season tickets sold, hopes are high, though 47 conceded suggests fifth to eighth.
