FLW's Birmingham fan pundit has given his verdict on Ryan Allsop being named the best goalkeeper in League One
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Ryan Allsop has been ranked as the best goalkeeper in League One following his strong performances for Birmingham City this season.
FLW broke down the 24 first-choice shot-stoppers and ranked them from best to worst, with the 32-year-old coming out on top.
Allsop joined the Blues last summer following the club’s relegation from the Championship.
However, his performances have helped Chris Davies’ side achieve promotion back to the second tier at the first time of asking, with multiple games spare.
When asked whether Allsop is the best goalkeeper in League One, FLW’s Birmingham fan pundit Mike Gibbs agreed, praising his form this year.
He believes that he is the ideal modern goalkeeper, being able to play with the ball and start attacks with his passing ability, while also still providing strong shot-stopping when required.
“I 100 percent agree with that, I think for a number of reasons,” Gibbs told Football League World.
“Number one, I think you look at the number of clean sheets he’s had.
“I can’t really remember him making an error all year.
“His distribution as well is outstanding, the number of attacks he’s started with his long balls, short balls, he’s just a really cool, calm presence, excellent shot-stopper, excellent distributor.
“And I think his record says everything, really.
“Yes, he’s got a strong side ahead of him, but he’s still built that confidence, pulled off the saves and just been fantastic.
“He is the definition of a modern goalkeeper, for me, someone who can play with his feet and start the attack.”
Birmingham are heading straight back to the Championship, and now have their sights set on a record points haul in League One on their way to the title.
Allsop has performed well in League One, and his record speaks for itself in terms of being the division’s best.
The 32-year-old took the step down from the Championship to join this project, and will now likely be a key part of their side next year.
The Blues are ambitious, and will want to be competitive in the second division next season, so Allsop maintaining this strong form will be imperative.
His experience at that level will be invaluable in the dressing room, especially given the amount of turnover there’s been in the Birmingham squad.
