Vincent Kompany’s week at FC Bayern could hardly be more symbolic. The 2-1 victory at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu not only marked an important step towards the semi-finals of the Champions League, but also a very special personal anniversary for the Belgian. It was his 100th competitive match on the sidelines of the German record champions – and just a few days later, Kompany also celebrated his 40th birthday
The victory in Madrid is emblematic of the development that FC Bayern has undergone under Kompany. Since taking the helm in the 2024/25 season, the coach has established a clear signature – characterized by bold attacking soccer, high pressing and a clearly recognizable game idea
A look at the figures underlines this impression impressively. After 100 games, Kompany has 76 wins, 13 draws and just 11 defeats. Even more telling is the goal difference of 302:101 – proof of the attacking power that Munich have developed under his leadership
Bayern are dominant under Kompany, controlling games for long stretches and putting opponents under pressure early on. At the same time, the team has also stabilized defensively and shows the necessary maturity, especially in crucial phases

The anniversary game in Madrid brought many of these elements to the fore, with Bayern creating numerous chances against a Real Madrid side with a high-calibre individual line-up and defending with great consistency at critical moments
Kompany himself analysed the game in his usual matter-of-fact manner after the final whistle: „You always had the feeling that the game was on a knife-edge and could tip one way or the other. We felt we had more and better chances.“ At the same time, he highlighted the defensive work and praised Manuel Neuer for „some incredible saves“
It was also typical of the 40-year-old to deal with the result. Despite the prestigious victory, he remained focused: „Everyone in the dressing room is still very calm, we have to win again to progress.“ Nevertheless, he did not want to downplay the significance of the moment: „I want our boys to know that they won at the Bernabéu. That is also worth something, we have to take that with us.“
However, Kompany’s special week is not over yet. The next Bundesliga fixture awaits on Saturday with an away game at FC St. Pauli, before the second leg against Real Madrid for a place in the semi-finals
„We want to make the difference with our fans in the Allianz Arena,“ announced the Bayern coach, already looking ahead
It has been a week full of milestones for Vincent Kompany, both on a sporting and personal level. The victory at the Bernabéu, the strong record after 100 games and his milestone birthday paint the picture of a coach who has arrived at FC Bayern – and whose development is far from complete.
