Liverpool are facing another growing uncertainty ahead of a crucial summer, with serious doubts emerging around whether Ibrahima Konaté will sign a new contract at the club.
During the latest Media Matters podcast on Anfield Index, Dave Davis and David Lynch discussed the increasingly complicated situation surrounding the Liverpool defender, whose current deal is set to expire next month.
Davis pointed to the lack of progress and growing speculation around the France international, saying: “There is a week left to go of the season and Ibrahima Konate has still not signed a new deal.”
That uncertainty has fuelled increasing links with a move away from Liverpool, with Davis suggesting the situation now appears to be moving in only one direction.
“You’ve got to steer more towards it’s likely that Konate is off now, haven’t you?” he asked Lynch during the discussion.
Lynch, however, revealed that the situation may not be as straightforward as many supporters fear. According to him, Konate himself still wants to remain at Liverpool.
“100%. That is my understanding,” Lynch said. “The player would like to stay at Liverpool. That would be his preference and has been all along.”
That revelation shifted the focus away from the player and towards Liverpool’s hierarchy. Lynch suggested the club may now be hesitating over whether they want to commit to a new deal.
“The sense I’m getting from this is that the club are making a decision that they don’t want to go down that route maybe,” he explained.
For Liverpool supporters, that possibility raises significant questions. Konate has endured an inconsistent season by his own standards, but he remains one of the club’s most important defenders and a key part of the long term spine of the side.

The uncertainty around Konate arrives during a period of growing instability at Liverpool. Questions already surround Arne Slot’s future, several senior players have been linked with exits and concerns persist about recruitment strategy.
Lynch openly questioned whether Liverpool should trust their own judgement if they allow Konate to leave.
“The thing is, and I know he’s not had a fantastic season by his usual standards, but would you trust their judgement on this?” he asked.
He also warned that losing Konate would create yet another area of disruption for a side already lacking continuity.
“For me it would be the wrong decision,” Lynch added.
That theme continued throughout the conversation. Liverpool have already been linked with defensive reinforcements, while speculation around replacements has intensified as the contract stand off drags on.
Part of the concern comes from the wider market. Lynch noted that centre backs are increasingly expensive and difficult to replace.
“It’s a poor market for centre halves at the moment,” he said, while also cautioning against speculation around Konate’s wage demands.
Importantly, Lynch stressed that many of the reported figures surrounding Konate’s contract discussions remain unclear.
“We don’t know the numbers really on Konate’s contract,” he explained.
Still, the overall tone of the discussion reflected growing unease around Liverpool’s handling of the situation. If Konate genuinely wants to stay, but Liverpool remain uncertain, supporters may begin to question whether the club are creating another unnecessary problem during an already turbulent period.
With the defender’s contract nearing its expiry and no agreement yet announced, Liverpool now face a major decision that could shape both their defence and the wider direction of the squad heading into next season.
