Eighteen Senegalese supporters detained in Morocco since mid January following incidents at the Africa Cup of Nations final have begun a hunger strike. According to L'Équipe, they are being tried on a hooliganism charge.
They say they have waited since 18 January to be told what they are accused of and complain of police questioning in French and Arabic, while they understand only Wolof. Their message was sent to their lawyer, Patrick Kabou.
They state they will fast continuously in prayer and reflection until the Moroccan courts give them the opportunity to present their version of events.
The hooliganism accusation includes alleged violence against security forces, damage to sporting equipment and the throwing of projectiles.
An initial hearing in late January was postponed at the request of the defence and the civil party to allow more time to prepare. Another short session on Thursday rejected their applications for conditional release. The case has been adjourned to 12 February because of a lawyers' strike in Morocco.
