While clubs across the EFL will have prepared themselves for a very busy January transfer window, for Sheffield Wednesday, it could be an extremely difficult month.

The Owls are rooted firmly to the bottom of the Championship table after 25 games after having 18 points deducted over the course of the season so far, and the main focus remains on finding a new owner following administration.

Nonetheless, the footballing world continues and with Wednesday's lowly league position and the uncertainty shrouding their future, some of their key players will be at risk of departing the club this month as other teams look for new signings.

Football League World has taken a look at two Sheffield Wednesday players who may well leave Hillsborough before next week.

Pierce Charles

Pierce Charles is Wednesday's brightest spark, and at just 20-years-old, he is playing beyond his years between the posts in S6.

The Northern Ireland international has made nine appearances in the league for the Owls so far this season, with a shoulder injury keeping him out of the team for the majority of the campaign.

However, that has not stopped Strasbourg from showing an interest in the shot-stopper this winter.

According to The Star, the French outfit are interested in bringing Charles to Ligue Un this month. Pedersen will be keen to keep his first-choice stopper in South Yorkshire, but with the club in administration, it will be the buying club who have the advantage in any negotiations and therefore a move could be arranged.

Strasbourg appointed Gary O'Neil on Wednesday morning following Liam Rosenior's switch to Chelsea, and bringing in a young British goalkeeper could be the perfect way to start his tenure in France.

Charlie McNeill

Just like Charles, 2025/26 has been somewhat of a breakout year for Charlie McNeill, with the 22-year-old making his mark in an attacking role for the Owls over the course of the last four months.

McNeill has scored three goals and has registered one assist for Sheffield Wednesday in 21 Championship fixtures - having only played four games at this level prior to this season.

McNeill was a wonderkid at youth level, scoring over 600 goals, before featuring for both Manchester City and Manchester United's academy sides in recent years. However, a host of Championship clubs are now showing an interest in the Droylsden-born ace, as per a report from The Star.

He has shown great improvement under the guidance of Pedersen over the course of the last few months, and while there is still room for more development, the possibility of doing this in the second tier will catch the eye of McNeill and, therefore, it would not be a surprise to see a move come about in January.

Sheffield Wednesday's number 17 has also featured in the EFL for both Newport County and Stevenage, racking up a combined 23 appearances in League One and League Two.

Yet, with it likely that the Owls will be heading to the third tier for next season, McNeill may well just have his chance to stay in the Championship sooner rather than later.
