Round 7 in K League 2 brings together two sides tipped for an immediate return to the top flight, as Suwon FC and Daegu FC renew their rivalry in unfamiliar surroundings. With both teams still finding consistency and defensive frailties beginning to show, this weekend’s clash could offer an early indication of who is better equipped for the promotion push ahead.

Round 7 sees Suwon FC and Daegu FC, who were both competing in K League 1 until last season, meet again - this time in K League 2. Both sides are considered strong promotion contenders, adding extra weight to what is already a compelling rivalry. Daegu held a slight edge last season with two wins, one draw, and one loss, and there is plenty of intrigue around how this matchup will unfold in a new setting.

Suwon FC made a flying start to the campaign with four straight wins but suffered their first defeat of the season in Round 6, losing 3-0 to Seoul E-Land. The result was particularly disappointing as it came against a direct promotion rival.

Defensive issues were at the heart of that loss. Suwon FC’s flexible back-three build-up structure was effectively nullified by Seoul E-Land’s tailored approach, cutting off the link between defence and midfield and disrupting their attacking flow. They also struggled to contain quick opposition attacks, conceding three goals. That said, with attacking threats like Willyan Barbosa, Matheis Frizzo, and Ha Jeong-woo still capable of causing problems, Suwon FC will be confident of bouncing back if they can quickly address those weaknesses.

Daegu, meanwhile, face similar concerns at the back. They have been one of the league’s most potent attacking sides, scoring 13 goals - the second-highest tally - but have also conceded 13, the joint second-most in the league. In Round 6 against Gimpo FC, they were unable to hold onto their lead and had to settle for a draw after conceding late. Many of their goals conceded have come from lapses in marking during defensive situations. Maintaining their attacking edge, led by Seraphim and Edgar, while improving defensive concentration from front to back will be key. After opening the season with three straight wins, Daegu have slowed with one draw and two losses in their last three matches.

The match between Suwon FC and Daegu kicks off at 2 PM on Saturday, April 11th at Suwon Sports Complex.

Team of the Round

Chungbuk Cheongju still searching for that first win

Chungbuk Cheongju are yet to record their first win of the season, but their performances have been consistently encouraging.

In Round 6, they held promotion favourites Suwon Samsung Bluewings to a 0-0 draw, showcasing how they can match even the best in the division. Despite a challenging historical record against the Bluewings (three draws and three losses), Cheongju approached the match with confidence and intensity. In fact, they outshot Suwon 10 to six.

Their effectiveness stemmed from aggressive pressing and compact spacing. By maintaining tight distances between their attacking and defensive lines, they were able to disrupt Suwon’s control of midfield and limit half-space penetration. Players like Mender García, Lee Jong-eon, and Hong Seok-jun applied persistent pressure during the opposition’s build-up, while in attack, Cheongju impressed with fluid combinations in wide areas and quick passing triangles. Head coach Rui Quinta’s possession-focused philosophy proved effective even against top opposition.

Still in search of their first win, Chungbuk Cheongju now travel to face Cheonan City. The hosts secured their first victory of the season in Round 5 with a 1-0 win over Jeonnam Dragons and had a bye in Round 6.

The match kicks off at 2 PM on Sunday, April 12th at Cheonan Sports Complex.

Player of the Round

Chungnam Asan's difference-maker Kim Jong-min

Chungnam Asan initially relied on Charles Lokolingoy, who scored three goals in their opening two matches, to lead the attack. However, as he went quiet in the following three games, Kim Jong-min has stepped up to provide a new solution.

In Round 6 against Ansan Greeners, Kim Jong-min came off the bench to score twice and lead his side to a 3-1 victory. With his team trailing 1-0, he equalised in the 76th minute with a volley, shifting the momentum. Then, deep into stoppage time, he showed composure under pressure - winning a physical duel before calmly controlling the ball and finishing to seal the win.

In just 36 minutes on the pitch, Kim made a decisive impact. Both goals came from situations where he held his own against defenders, and he also demonstrated his aerial strength, winning three of four aerial duels. His performance earned him Round MVP honours.

Chungnam Asan, now targeting a third consecutive win, host Gimhae FC 2008 this round. Gimhae are still searching for form, having lost all five of their matches so far this season. The match kicks off at 4:30 PM on Sunday, April 12th at Yi Sun-sin Stadium.
