Placed in Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Benin is playing for history during this October break. For Andreas Hountondji, achieving the extraordinary is within reach.
Speaking to FIFA media, Andreas Hountondji shared his thoughts with two matches remaining in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. According to the Benin Cheetah, his team is on the verge of making history. "I think if we don't tell ourselves this is a real opportunity... then we must be crazy! There are two matches left and if we win both, there's a great chance we'll make it. Our destiny is in our own hands, so now, we have to believe." he said.
As a reminder, Benin currently leads Group C with 14 points, following the FIFA sanction against South Africa. The Cheetahs face two crucial matches to close out the qualifiers, first against Rwanda and then Nigeria. For Hountondji, the result of the first match could set the tone for the second. "I think the most important thing for this team is really that first match against Rwanda. If we manage to win it, we'll be in a great position for the second game against Nigeria. I hope it will motivate us even more, because Benin has never done this before and it could be something truly... extraordinary." he added.
