Donald Trump - Gianni Infantino
With five months to go before the kickoff of the 2026 World Cup, could the United States be excluded from the very tournament they are co-hosting?
On Tuesday, the British broadcaster BBC revealed that a group of 23 British MPs from various parties—including Labour, the Liberal Democrats, the Greens, and Plaid Cymru—had signed a motion urging international sports organizations to consider banning the United States from major competitions. The calls begin with the 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. is set to co-host. The signatories argue that the country should be temporarily sidelined until it demonstrates a “clear respect for international law and the sovereignty of other nations.”
They cite as justification Washington’s recent military actions in Latin America and Africa, notably the interventions in Venezuela and Nigeria. The motion, submitted outside of formal parliamentary proceedings, puts pressure on FIFA and other sports federations at a time when the global football body has already honored U.S. President Donald Trump with a peace award.
