Amid rumors about a possible postponement of the 2026 World Cup due to geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran, FIFA has moved to reassure fans. The world football governing body insists that the tournament will go ahead as planned.

The tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is set to kick off in three months. This edition is set to make history with 48 teams participating for the first time ever, and matches spread across three nations.

In response to speculation sparked by the recent conflict between Washington and Tehran, FIFA maintains that the event is not under threat. Heimo Schirgi, FIFA’s Chief Operating Officer, emphasized the magnitude of the work already completed in preparation for the tournament.

Speaking Monday at the International Broadcast Center in Dallas, he made it clear that there was no question of a postponement.

"At some point, we will find a solution, and of course the World Cup will take place. The World Cup is simply too significant, and we hope that all qualified teams will be able to participate," he said.

Nevertheless, the international situation continues to fuel concerns. The war between the United States and Iran, which broke out just over a week ago, has raised questions about the participation of certain nations. Iran, which is scheduled to face Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt in the group stage, could face particular challenges regarding travel arrangements.

On top of that, travel restrictions imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump are complicating the arrival of some fans and delegations. Administrative issues have already been reported, notably for Haitian players who had difficulties obtaining visas even before the tournament began.

Despite these uncertainties, FIFA says it is closely monitoring the situation and remains in constant contact with the relevant authorities. For now, no changes to the schedule are being considered, and organizers assure that World Cup preparations are proceeding as normal.

The tournament is therefore expected to kick off next June, as originally planned.
