Excitement is steadily building in Canada, the USA, and Mexico as the 2026 World Cup inches closer. The competition is now just a few weeks away, as teams begin to make their final preparations for the competition.

While all three of the host nations qualified outright, that doesn’t lessen any of the expectations that fans have for them. In fact, the opposite is more true, with the added pressure of playing in front of a home crowd factored in.

The expansion of the competition to 48 teams, along with the eight best third-placed teams advancing to the knockouts, means that all of Canada, the USA, and Mexico have a great chance of reaching the latter stages. But how have each of the host nations done at the World Cup historically? And will this year be any different for some?

Canada

This will only be the third time that Canada will be playing at a World Cup. And their fans, who are hoping for big things, can back their team at the summer competition and bet on sports by checking out the best websites on Canada Sports Betting.

In the past, the World Cup has not been kind to Canada. Their first appearance in 1986 ended at the group stages, as they left Mexico with three defeats against the Soviet Union, France and Hungary. And in 2022, after qualifying for the first time in 36 years, it was a similar story. Despite possessing a talented squad which included Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David, Canada once again lost all three group stage games in Qatar.

There’s greater optimism this time around with the emergence of players like Ismaël Koné, while talisman David has continued to develop. Now ranked as a top-30 nation globally, Canada are in the best position they have ever been in prior to a World Cup. The Canucks now need to step up in difficult matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Switzerland.

USA

Historically, the USA’s best finish came in the first World Cup in 1930, as the Stars and Stripes placed third in Uruguay. But more recent performances in the 21st century have been a mixed bag.

While they reached the quarter-finals in 2002, they missed out entirely in 2018, and their last three appearances have ended with elimination in the Round of 16. Drawn in Group D, they will be confident of reaching the knockout stages on home turf, although Paraguay, Turkey, and Australia could all prove to be tricky customers.

The USA have a proven manager at the helm in the form of Mauricio Pochettino, as well as a talented squad which includes Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson, and Weston McKennie. But after losing to Belgium and Portugal in recent friendlies, questions over the team’s ceiling remain.

Mexico

Of all the host nations, Mexico have been the most consistent through the years. Banned in 1990 after the Cachirules scandal, El Tri have played at every World Cup since, reaching the Round of 16 each time aside from an early group stage elimination in 2022.

Their best performances in the competition remains reaching the quarter-finals, a feat that they have managed on two occasions, in 1970 and 1986, both years when they hosted the World Cup. Now, as the world prepares to head to Mexico once again, there’s hope that the nation can match or even surpass those previous bests.

Fulham’s Raúl Jiménez will once again lead the line, but there are bright talents in the form of Armando González and Brian Gutierrez. Group A matches against South Africa, South Korea and the Czech Republic should all be winnable games, while performances against Portugal and Belgium show that they can contend with bigger teams, too.
