On Saturday, NJ/NY Gotham FC wanted to continue their fantastic form in front of their fans and some special guests. USWNT Head Coach Emma Hayes was in the stadium for Club and Country Night, and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was also there to catch the game. Thankfully, despite the rain, more supporters were there this time compared to the last fixture, and they watched an entertaining battle.
While Gotham FC did not pick up the win, the evening ended in a 1-1 draw, keeping the Bats' current unbeaten streak alive. The scoreless streak sadly came to an end at 341 minutes after Boston’s goal, thanks to Alba Caño. Her shot hit the post and ultimately bounced in, leaving Ann-Katrin Berger with an impossible chance to make the save.
Offensively, the NJ/NY team played at a high level. Jaedyn Shaw was responsible for Gotham’s lone goal after Esther González’s shot was saved, and the USWNT player scored on the rebound. But with 17 shots and seven on target, the home side should have had at least one more goal. But the defensive effort from the Legacy was noticeable, and truly made this a fun game.
As always, there is plenty to discuss. Here are three things we learned about the entertaining game between Gotham FC and Boston Legacy FC.
When Gotham FC was without five defenders, including Lilly Reale, coming back from the international break, Juan Carlos Amorós had to put together a makeshift backline. Guro Reiten and Midge Purce had to step in as the left-back and right-back, respectively, and Reiten has done well to fill in for Reale.
Normally, the newest Bat would be in the final third, and it was thought that once Reale was ready to start again, she would be back in the defense. After all, there is a reason she won the Rookie of the Year in 2025. But Reiten again started over the young defender.
Perhaps the head coach does not want to disrupt the team that has led to multiple wins, and that is why he stuck with Reiten. And despite being a makeshift backline, the ladies did not allow a goal until Saturday. Plus, the attack has done well, and Amorós likely did not want to move any of those players either.
It will be interesting to see whether Reale returns to the starting lineup during the next few fixtures.
In the second half, there was a collision in the box between Laís Araújo and Jordyn Dudley. The Gotham FC rookie and her opponent ended up on the ground, and at first glance, it looked like a normal collision.
However, when watching the review, there was clear contact on Dudley where her heel was clipped as Jorelyn Carabalí ran into her. This led to her falling to the ground, ultimately hurting her chances to try to score. As a result, the play went to VAR.
But, after review, no foul was called. If they had gotten the call, then Gotham would have had a chance to go ahead and possibly win the match. Of course, the Bats were strong offensively and should have scored at least one more time. But the Legacy’s defensive work rate ultimately kept them out. So, looking at that moment with about 15 minutes of regulation to go, it is disappointing that a foul was not called, even with VAR.
At the same time, the argument might have been that it was too close to overturn. Or that the players involved were all going for the ball, and they viewed Carabalí as a part of the collision. Nevertheless, Gotham still has the argument that they were robbed of a penalty kick.
As mentioned, this was an entertaining matchup. There were some back-and-forth moments, but the offensive output from the Bats, especially at the end of the game, made the fixture fun to watch. The 11,308 fans were on the edge of their seats, especially as Gotham chased that second goal.
In fact, Saturday’s game was the most attended this year, which is something that was argued for last week. It would be nice to see even more in the stands, but those at Sports Illustrated Stadium were loud and wild, cheering on the NJ/NY side. The supporters added to the fun.
The match might have ended in a draw, but there is no question that many will view the result contentedly, knowing that Gotham FC gave their all to try and beat a superb Boston defense.
