Manchester City have already begun to work in the summer transfer window. The backbone of the team is ageing, minutes are weighing heavily, and rivals are fine-tuning their game. City, who dominate with the ball, do not want to rest on their laurels. Players like Kyle Walker are no longer as important as they once were, and although he is still performing at a high level, future planning leaves him out of the spotlight. His contract, his age and the need to renew the squad are driving important decisions.

According to The Sun, Fulham have enquired about the 35-year-old. Marco Silva’s team are looking for a right-back because Kenny Tete will not be staying. That is why the 35-year-old English veteran has become a target. However, Fulham will not get him.

The full-back has already agreed to join Everton and will sign for one season. The Merseyside club will complete the deal at a low cost, thus covering the departure of Ashley Young. City will not stand in the way because the Englishman is no longer part of their plans. The club want to reduce their wage bill and make way for younger players.

Opinion:

In my opinion, City are right to let Walker go, but they should have pushed a little harder for a fair price. Although his age is a factor, he is still an influential player in the dressing room. Giving away experience, especially to a rival in the same league, always leaves an uncomfortable feeling. Everton gain a lot from this signing: a disciplined professional with experience who knows the rhythm of the English league. Fulham lose out on an an interesting option, but perhaps that will push them to look for a younger player.

City, on the other hand, have room to renew that position. Rico Lewis is already asking for more minutes, and if another promising full-back arrives, the team can maintain their defensive line without any surprises. Walker has been fundamental, but every cycle has an end. The club cannot cling to the past. The key will be to invest those savings wisely and not leave the squad short-handed. Letting Walker go is not a risk, it is an opportunity to move forward. However, if they do not sign intelligently, they will end up regretting it.
