Chelsea kick off Premier League matchday three with a mouth-watering London derby against next-door foes Fulham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
The Blues got off to a rocky start as they were held to a goalless stalemate against Crystal Palace on home turf, but the performance was encouraging.
After shaking off the rust, the Blues unleashed their full attacking firepower on capital rivals West Ham United, handing former head coach Graham Potter a 5-0 thrashing in their own backyard.
Maresca will demand more of the same from his troops when they host Fulham on Saturday. However, they might have to do it without talisman Cole Palmer after Maresca’s injury update.
Maresca issued a frustrating injury update during his pre-match press conference after ruling Palmer out of the upcoming contest.
The 23-year-old was set to start the game against West Ham, but he was withdrawn minutes before kick-off after picking up a knock while warming up.
It was later confirmed that he had sustained a groin injury, and while it’s not thought to be a serious issue, Maresca has decided not to rush his recovery.
Palmer was left out of Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad, and Chelsea will be hoping to have their lynchpin back to full fitness after the international break.
Maresca also ruled out Romeo Lavia and Benoit Badiashile, although there is hope that the Belgian midfielder can return after the break.
Robert Sanchez appears to have turned a corner since the tail end of last season and should retain his place as the Blues’ designated shot stopper.
Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah should continue their partnership at the heart of the defence with Marc Cucurella and Reece James on either side.
Moises Caicedo should anchor the midfield alongside Enzo Fernandez, while Pedro Neto and Estevao line up on the flanks.
Maresca could be tempted to repeat the trick he used at West Ham and deploy Joao Pedro in Palmer’s role while Liam Delap leads the line.
