The Dejphon Chansiri era at Sheffield Wednesday is coming to an end following the club’s move into administration.

The Thai businessman earned the ire of supporters due to his mismanagement of the club’s finances in recent years.

But a new owner is on the horizon now, with several interested parties reportedly interested in a takeover following the appointment of Begbies Traynor as administrator.

Chansiri originally took over the Yorkshire outfit in 2015, and there were many ups and downs in that time including promotion pushes and relegations.

In that time, many players also came and went, but some signings made a bigger impact than others during this era of the club.

When asked who the worst signing of the Chansiri era is, FLW’s Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit, Patrick McKenna, highlights Jordan Rhodes (pictured above) and Ike Ugbo as honourable mentions.

He cites both as massively disappointing additions to the forward line, in particular the latter due to the amount of games in a row he’s gone with contributing a single goal or assist.

“The name Jordan Rhodes always does pop up,” McKenna told Football League World.

“He was, quite simply, an horrendous waste of money.

“Ike Ugbo could be a contender because, quite frankly, it’s absolutely abysmal that he hasn’t scored or assisted in his last 46 league appearances.

“However, he doesn’t get the nomination because his time here has been during the absolute worst of Chansiri era, with the complete decimation of the squad, the non-paying of wages, however, any good grace he has has fallen away.”

However, McKenna has ultimately chosen £4m Almen Abdi as the worst addition to the Sheffield Wednesday squad under Chansiri, claiming that the midfielder completely failed to live up to expectations after arriving from Watford.

“But I think on this occasion the standout candidate is the absolute mystery that was Almen Abdi.

“He was signed for a bit of money to add something to our midfield and, having watched him play for Watford, he looked a really good player, a top end Championship player who was going to come to us and help push us on towards challenging for the Premier League.

“I was genuinely excited by this signing, but then just what happened? In three years, we had something like 900 minutes of league football from him, with 108 of those being in his first two appearances.

“So, after that he just kind of drifted and he always seemed to be either injured or just not in the squad.

“So what quite was going on there? I suppose we don’t really know.

“Was it down solely to injuries or were there any other issues going on? But yeah, as a fan, he was signed, we were expecting to see something on the pitch for him to really bolster our squad.

“But literally he added nothing, apart from one good goal at Nottingham Forest.

“I’m struggling to think what else he did in his time here, apart from collect a wage.

“He was a complete waste of a signing, and unfortunately it turned out to be a shambolic signing, symbolic of the Chansiri era.

“It’s a really disappointing one in that he should’ve offered so much but he offered absolutely nothing.”

Almen Abdi signing was a total waste for Sheffield Wednesday

Abdi spent four seasons with Watford, and was a consistent presence in the side for most of that time, including making 32 appearances in the Premier League in his final campaign with the club.

But he played just 20 times for the Owls across two years at Hillsborough, making just 12 starts.

His time with the club was a massive disappointment, and he proved a real waste of resources given the expectations placed on his arrival.

There were many bad signings made under Chansiri, but it’s hard to argue against Abdi being the worst of them all.
