These five Huddersfield players will surely be looking at a move away this summer, either on loan or permanently

Huddersfield Town will be hoping it'll be third time's the charm when it comes to getting out of League One, as the Terriers aim to finally earn promotion back to the Championship at the third attempt.

It's been an uncharacteristically quiet summer transfer window so far at the Accu Stadium, with only five new additions so far, and the majority of those happened early on in the window.

The past couple of summers have seen wholesale changes to the squad as the ambitious Huddersfield higher-ups look to make a splash and bring in numerous Championship-standard players. This year, things have seemingly been different.

The Terriers have already streamlined their squad quite a bit this summer. The likes of Alfie May and Dion Charles were sent out on loan, Lee Nicholls left to join Preston North End as the goalkeeper department was shaken up, and Mickel Miller, Neo Eccleston and Rhys Healey were all released at the end of their contracts.

Arguably, Huddersfield need additions, especially in wide areas, rather than more players leaving, but these five especially will be looking for moves away come the end of the summer transfer window, either on loan or permanently.

Jay Smith-Sway

Young right-back Jay Smith-Sway is one of the more exciting players to come out of the Huddersfield academy recently, and there was speculation throughout 2026 that he could be making the move to a Championship side, with Middlesbrough reportedly interested.

But the 19-year-old was one of five academy prospects to sign fresh terms at the Accu Stadium, penning a deal until 2029, and has spent the ongoing pre-season training with and getting valuable first-team minutes.

When the League One campaign gets underway, though, it's evident that he won't be ready for first-team action in the third tier. He spent five games on loan at Hartlepool United last year, and another National League, or even a League Two loan move, should be in his sights.

Another academy player who signed extended terms with Huddersfield this summer was midfielder Daniel Vost, agreeing an extension until the summer of 2028.

Unlike Sway, though, the 20-year-old broke into a few League One squads as the campaign went on last season, making three substitute appearances, alongside playing in every EFL Trophy, EFL Cup and FA Cup clash last year, too.

The engine room is incredibly busy at Huddersfield ahead of the new term, though, so a loan move further down the EFL should be on the cards too for Vost.

With the arrival of Ethan Brierley, Martin Drury has his first-choice midfield pivot set ahead of the new campaign, as the former Brentford man will more than definitely partner club captain Ryan Ledson in the middle of the park in League One action.

There are three senior players currently in reserve, plus some attacking midfielders who could do a job further back, so someone like Marcus McGuane could find himself expendable if the new Huddersfield boss opts for David Kasumu and Herbie Kane as his two backups.

It was a difficult debut campaign at the Accu Stadium for the former Bristol City and Oxford United man. A groin injury limited him to just one appearance in the first half of the campaign, and he was sent off in his first start back against Bradford City in January.

He was in-and-out from then on, appearing mostly as a substitute under the interim leadership of Drury and Jon Stead, so the arrival of Brierley could see him on the move again this summer.

Cameron Ashia

Huddersfield were unable to agree fresh terms for Cameron Ashia this summer, with the one-year extension option they had ultimately being the best they could do to keep the exciting 21-year-old from leaving for free.

Ashia excelled off the bench in parts last season, scoring three and assisting three in fewer than 650 third-tier minutes, with six goals in all competitions, but his actions this summer haven't led Huddersfield fans to look forward to seeing him back in the side.

Speculation over him missing parts of pre-season and training in a Sheffield Wednesday shirt has really soured Town fans' perception of him, and with less than a year left on his deal, perhaps Huddersfield may be best cashing in on him before the window closes.

And finally, George Sebine was another of those academy prospects who extended their stay at the Accu Stadium through to 2029, and the 19-year-old is arguably the most exciting of the lot.

The former Guiseley frontman emerged in the senior fold under Martin Drury and Jon Stead towards the end of last season, making six league appearances, starting a couple, and also scoring in the final-day win at AFC Wimbledon.

Sebine has plenty of promise, but the return of Joe Taylor and the arrival of Ashley Fletcher, alongside the presence of Bojan Radulovic, will make regular minutes hard to come by.
