Although reinforcing the flanks is not among their most urgent priorities, FC Barcelona are still expected to explore options in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Catalans already have the option to retain Joao Cancelo beyond his current loan spell, but doing so would require negotiations with Al-Hilal.
Meanwhile, the Catalans are also being linked with other names in the market, and one such name that has been associated with them for some time now is the Chelsea fullback Marc Cucurella.
As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the Spaniard is not going through his best time at the London club since the departure of Enzo Maresca. In addition, the Premier League side is unlikely to feature in next season’s Champions League, which could further influence his situation.
Cucurella himself has opened the door to a return to his boyhood club recently, something he had previously avoided doing in public. “It would be difficult to reject it. I would have to think about my family. If it comes, it comes, and we’ll see what decision is made,” the defender admitted ahead of Spain’s clash with Egypt.
Despite this openness, there has been no formal contact so far between the two parties. Still, the €50 million-rated Catalan defender remains a player to watch, especially as his current contract at Chelsea runs until 2028, with an option for an additional year.
From a financial standpoint, any potential move would not be straightforward. Chelsea would reportedly demand around €50 million for the Spanish international. This aligns with the English club’s own need to balance accounts and avoid financial fair play complications.
On a personal level, a return to Barcelona would carry special significance for Cucurella, who came through La Masia and still holds strong ties to the club. While he has expressed happiness living in London, his current sporting situation is less stable, making a move increasingly plausible if the right offer arrives.
Within Barcelona’s squad planning, both fullback positions are under review, even if other areas remain higher priorities. Cancelo has established himself on the left side, ahead of Alejandro Balde, who is not at his best level, while Gerard Martin has been used more as a central defensive option.
As a result, Cucurella’s potential arrival would depend not only on finances but also on how Barcelona reshape their defensive depth in the coming months.
