€50m potential price tag should make Chelsea rip up their plans and target elite player

The line that comes from those connected with Chelsea’s sporting directors always remains the same: the Blues are happy with the goalkeepers they’ve got, and they won’t be looking to add anyone new in the summer.

We can well believe that – it may be true. But we also wouldn’t at all be surprised if that was just a smoke screen, designed to disguise our pursuit of a new player.

According to an exclusive from TeamTalk today, that player could be Diogo Costa.

This isn’t the first time we’ve been linked with the Porto stopper. He’s continued to impress in Portugal, and looks ready to move to the Premier League or to a Champions League contender. As well as the Blues, Man United, Man City and Bayern Munich are mentioned as potentially interested.

Now 25, Costa could have ten years at his peak ahead of him. He’s a great shot stopped and good on the ball too. He would fit in nicely with the Portuguese and Brazilian contingent we’ve got, he’s got tons of experience. What are we waiting for?

Fresh start in goal could be Chelsea’s best move

Diogo Costa playing for Portugal.

We would absolutely love Chelsea to sign Costa. In fact, we suggested him last summer and the summer before that. His €75m release clause is expensive, but we’d imagine a fee closer to €50m would land him pretty easily given he will soon be into his last 2 years of contract.

When you add up how much we’ve spent on Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic and Robert Sanchez, it clearly would have been a better idea to just get Costa a couple of years ago.

Instead of falling prey to the sunk cost fallacy, let’s go out there and sign him and start making concrete improvements to the first team right now.
