Willie Kivlichan scored twice

ONE – SATURDAY 8 FEBRUARY 1908 – Jimmy Quinn has been out with septicaemia in his toe for a month, and his deputy Davie McLean is also injured, but it is third choice centre forward Willie Kivlichan (an ex-Rangers player) who does the job at Ibrox to put Rangers out of the Scottish Cup. Celtic win 2-1 and Kivlichan scores in each half. Rangers goal comes from Archie Kyle on the half-time whistle. It is generally agreed that the best man on the field was Alec McNair, nicknamed not without cause “the icicle”.

TWO – SATURDAY 8 FEBRUARY 1936 – The world of Scottish football is absolutely rocked today. Celtic’s League form has been exceptional this year, and it is therefore all the more remarkable and disappointing when Celtic go out of the Scottish Cup to lowly St.Johnstone before 26,647 fans at Parkhead. Willie Buchan scores Celtic’s only goal, but as the team also lost last week to Hearts at Tynecastle, fans begin to fear that Celtic may have gone off the boil. McGrory in particular seems to have lost his touch, yet his form before the New Year was absolutely first-class.

THREE – SATURDAY 8 FEBRUARY 1964 – Celtic’s trouble has been inconsistency this season, but today at Pittodrie they show what they can do. Leading by a fortuitous own goal at half time, they step up a gear in the second half and score two more at the Beach End, one by the grossly under-rated Frank Brogan, and the other a wonderful swivel and turn by John Divers as Celtic run out 3-0, the day helped as well by news that St Mirren have beaten Rangers.

FOUR – SATURDAY 8 FEBRUARY 1986 – A dreadful game at Parkhead today which does little for Celtic’s title challenge as they drew 1-1 at Parkhead against St Mirren before a paltry crowd of 11,000 who departed distinctly pessimistic about Celtic’ chances for the rest of the season. Tommy Burns scored Celtic’s only goal.

FIVE – TUESDAY 8 FEBRUARY 2000 – Celtic’s night of infamy as they lose 1-3 to Inverness Caledonian Thistle and exit the Scottish Cup. Mark Burchill scores Celtic’s only goal in front of 34,389 fans, but it is clear that there is more than a little dressing room disharmony. Regime change swiftly follows this humiliation.
