A backup plan emerges for Manchester City in their hunt for midfield reinforcements

The midfield is one area that Manchester City will look to strengthen this summer. With Bernardo Silva set to leave the club, and question marks surrounding the futures of players such as Mateo Kovacic, Tijjani Reijnders, and Nico, it is easy to see why City will look to bolster their engine room this summer. Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson appears to be City’s top midfield target entering the summer transfer window. There is no doubt that City will have a list of midfielders they have their eyes on in case a move for Elliot Anderson doesn’t materialize.

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has been mentioned as a player whom City admire. The Argentinian midfielder is a proven commodity in the Premier League and seems well-suited to life at Manchester City.

Manchester City are reportedly considering a move for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

Sam Lee, Mario Cortegana, and Laurie Whitwell have reported for The Athletic that Manchester City are considering Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez as a potential transfer target for this summer. Furthermore, it is reported that City’s interest in the World Cup winner is at an early stage. It is also reported by The Athletic that City are exploring moves for other midfielders such as Elliot Anderson.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has also reported on Manchester City’s interest in a summer move for Enzo Fernandez. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: “Enzo Fernandez has been discussed internally at Manchester City, but they have different other top targets like Anderson, and Tonali is appreciated. They made checks on Enzo before. No negotiations; if they miss out on other targets, they might look at him as an opportunity.”

Enzo Fernandez is quality midfielder in his own right, but a move to City may be hard to pull off.

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez is a proven commodity as a player. During his time at Chelsea, Fernandez has shown that he is one of the elite midfielders in the Premier League. The Argentinian midfielder can operate as a number six or an eight, and he is superb at dictating matches from midfield. Enzo Fernandez reads the game well out of possession, and like all Argentinian players, he is tough in a challenge and feisty when required. Also, Fernandez is a goal threat when arriving late in the opponent’s penalty area. The strengths of Enzo Fernandez as a player are well-known. Given that he is an elite midfielder, it isn’t a surprise to discover that City have an early interest in the Chelsea midfielder.

However, if Manchester City did decide to move for Enzo Fernandez, it is a move that wouldn’t come cheap. Chelsea will not want to lose such an influential player as they continue the rebuild of their squad. Chelsea’s hand may be forced if Enzo Fernandez does pursue a summer exit from Chelsea. Even then, Chelsea will demand a kings ransom to sell Enzo Fernandez. For now, it seems that City are focused on a move for Elliot Anderson, and it is hard to see City spending large sums on two midfielders this summer. In my opinion, City would only move for Enzo Fernandez if a City move for Elliot Anderson doesn’t come together.

Enzo Fernandez is the latest midfielder to be named as a potential Manchester City transfer target. Enzo Fernandez is a fine player, but for now, the World Cup winner seems to be a player City like rather than one they seem certain to move for.
