A ‘bargain’ has appeared that could aid Manchester City’s chase for a full-back

Manchester City’s need to sign a full-back this summer appears to be glaring. They could potentially benefit from signing two. If they could sign both a left and a right-back, it would perfectly complement Pep Guardiola’s squad. That way, Manchester City could shift Josko Gvardiol to centre-back on a permanent basis and allow Rico Lewis to move into midfield. It would also allow Matheus Nunes to become a squad player rather than City’s first-choice right-back. Now it seems that a ‘bargain’ in a football sense has appeared on the market. That is Flamengo right-back Wesley. A new report indicates that City could move for the Brazilian international this summer.

Wesley has caught Manchester City’s eye, and they could move for the Brazilian international.

A new report from Gianluca Di Marzio indicates that Manchester City are eager to sign Wesley this summer. Furthermore, the Di Marzio report suggests that Pep Guardiola is pushing for City to sign the right-back. The report also indicates that City are hoping to seal a deal for Wesley before the FIFA Club World Cup begins in June.

Ahad Shaukat has previously reported for CaughtOffside that Manchester City are in the race to sign Wesley this summer. Shaukat further reports that Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Barcelona all have an interest in signing the Brazilian international. It is also reported by Shaukat that Flamengo would be willing to sell Wesley for between €30-35 million this summer.

The best attributes of Wesley fit into the Manchester City squad, and he could be a bargain signing.

As a player, Wesley appears suited to a role in Pep Guardiola’s squad. He can play as both an overlapping and an inverted full-back. That versatility would be a weapon for Guardiola to unleash. Wesley is also a weapon going forward, and his passing ability is superb. Those attributes would fit into the Manchester City set-up. Wesley isn’t the finished product, far from it. Defensively, he does need to develop that side of his game. But there is another benefit from Manchester City potentially moving for Wesley.

The reported transfer fee of between €30-35 million, as per Ahad Shaukat’s report, does represent a bargain of sorts in the transfer market. Manchester City are undertaking a sizable rebuild this summer. Not every signing can afford to be a big-money move due to PSR and FFP regulations. If there are bargains to be found, Manchester City could jump on them. A move for Flamengo right-back Wesley appears to be one.

The new Gianluca Di Marzio report indicates that Manchester City could move for Wesley. He is a quality player with his best years ahead of him. But he could also represent a bargain in the transfer market, which is another factor to consider in what shapes up as a busy summer for Manchester City.
