Erling Haaland scored a goal and grabbed an assist yesterday as Manchester City beat Brentford 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium to move within two points of Arsenal who sit top of the Premier League table. Mikel Arteta’s side have an opportunity to restore the gap at the top of table to five points if they beat West Ham at the London Stadium later today. City will have a game in hand on Arsenal after the Gunners match against West Ham. All City can do is take it one game at a time and see where that takes them for the remainder of this season as Erling Haaland pointed out after his team’s win.
All Manchester City can do from here is win their remaining three Premier League matches of the season and see where that takes them. If Arsenal win their remaining three games, they’ll be crowned Premier League champions. That’s the reality of the situation that City are facing in the title race. Pep Guardiola’s side can only take it one game at a time, and focusing on their next opponent rather than looking too far ahead is the best practice for City. This fact wasn’t lost on Erling Haaland when he spoke after Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Brentford.
In an interview published on mancity.com, Erling Haaland said he was happy that Manchester City beat Brentford yesterday. But he reiterated that City can only rest and focus on their next opponent, and nothing else. He explained: “It feels good to win 3-0. We just missed the last shot on goal today. We created a lot of chances and didn’t get the last shot on a lot of crosses. Brentford defended well. They are a good team. There are no easy games in the Premier League. So we are happy.”
“I haven’t thought of any other game. Just tired playing this game. How we approach the next game is to not think of any other games for two days and then try to win the next game. Recover. Then next game and then same again.bIf you play for Manchester City, you think of titles every single day.”
As Erling Haaland said, all Manchester City can do is focus on their next opponent. They play Crystal Palace next at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night in another crucial Premier League fixture. There is nothing to gain from Pep Guardiola’s side looking to fatigue ahead at this stage. All that matters to City is beating Crystal Palace and picking up another three points.
Having said that, Erling Haaland continued his strong season by scoring City’s second goal yesterday and adding an assist for Omar Marmoush to make it 3-0 late on. Haaland was far from Manchester City’s man-of-the-match yesterday. Jeremy Doku claimed that crown with a superb performance. However, Haaland played an important role in City’s win as he never stopped working for his team. He got his rewards in the second half with his goal and assist.
So far this season, Erling Haaland has scored 37 goals and added 8 assists in 50 appearances in all competitions. In the Premier League alone, Haaland has scored 26 goals, and all eight of his assists have come in the Premier League. The Norwegian international has had another strong season. That does get overlooked at times, given that Haaland is held to a higher standard than other strikers. Manchester City wouldn’t be in the position they are in, still fighting for a domestic treble, without Haaland’s stellar form this season. His performance yesterday was another example of how important Haaland is to Pep Guardiola’s side.
Erling Haaland said yesterday that all his team can do is focus on winning their next match, and that is it. Nothing else matters for Manchester City. Haaland’s statement is true, and City will be hoping that Haaland picks up where he left off against Brentford when City take on Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.
