Michael Olise is making waves as a right winger for FC Bayern. But even though the Frenchman is currently considered one of the best wingers in the world, he actually sees his ideal position as being in the center. The 24-year-old revealed this in a remarkably candid interview.

Michael Olise has long since become indispensable at FC Bayern. The Frenchman is one of the most important players on Vincent Kompany’s team and regularly makes headlines with goals, assists, and spectacular plays.

Olise is also one of the key players for the French national team at the World Cup. In the opening victory against Senegal, he shone with two assists and was subsequently named Man of the Match.

This makes the offensive star’s recent comments about his preferred position on the field all the more surprising.

Olise sees himself as a number 10

In an interview with the French sports newspaper L’Equipe, Olise was asked in which position he feels most comfortable. His answer was unequivocal. “I think my best position is the number 10—it gives me more freedom,” explained the Bayern Munich pro.

For many fans, this statement may come as a surprise. After all, Olise has played primarily on the right wing for years and is now considered one of the world’s best in that position.

But the Frenchman looks back on his early days in soccer. “I grew up playing in that position,” he explained. That’s why the role in attacking midfield still feels particularly natural to him today.

Even though he’s now mostly deployed on the wing, his connection to the classic playmaker role never seems to have completely faded.

France continues to deploy Olise centrally time and again

In fact, the number 10 position is by no means new territory for Olise. With the French national team, the attacking player has already been deployed in the center on several occasions. Especially under Thierry Henry at the Olympic Games, he took on the role of creative playmaker at times.

At FC Bayern, however, that position is currently locked down. With Jamal Musiala, the record champions have one of the best attacking midfielders in the world.

Nevertheless, Olise’s comments highlight just how versatile his game is. His footballing intelligence, vision, and exceptional passing ability would also shine in a central role.

In addition to his favorite position, Olise also spoke about where his special creativity on the field comes from.

For the Frenchman, the answer lies in his childhood. “I’d say it comes from playing street soccer,” he explained.

Together with his brother, he spent countless hours on pickup fields and in small soccer cages. “We played outside, kicked the ball against the wall, played one-on-one, and so on,” recalled the Bayern star.

That’s exactly where the playing style that sets him apart today developed: intuitive, creative, and hard to predict.

Longing for carefree days

Olise became particularly pensive when he spoke about the differences between then and now. The Frenchman admitted that he sometimes misses the carefree nature of his childhood. “When you’re young, you just play soccer. You have fun and don’t think about anything,” said the 24-year-old.

Perhaps it is precisely this mindset that explains why Olise has remained so down-to-earth despite his meteoric rise. While many superstars seek the limelight, the Bayern Munich pro prefers to let his performance on the field do the talking.

And there, regardless of his position, he’s currently among the best players in the world.
