Former Liverpool captain and TNT Sports pundit Steven Gerrard has lauded Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández for his dominant performance during the ongoing FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United at Wembley.
With the match crossing the 80-minute mark and Chelsea leading 1-0, Gerrard highlighted the Argentine’s tactical intelligence and work rate as the deciding factor in the contest so far.
Fernandez, wearing the captain’s armband, scored the opener in the 23rd minute after great assist from Pedro Neto, a goal that has kept the Blues in the driving seat for a place in the final.
Speaking on TNT Sports, Gerrard was quick to emphasise that Fernandez’s impact extended far beyond his crucial goal.
The pundit noted how the World Cup winner has dictated the tempo and found space against a compact Leeds defense.
He said (via BBC Sport):
“You have to say Enzo Fernandez has been absolutely tremendous from the get-go. He keeps picking up positions on the sides of them, behind them. He’s jumping on second balls.
“He played a lovely pass earlier to Joao Pedro, so he’s certainly influencing this game. It’s a big goal for Chelsea, in the context of the day and also for the run they are on.”
The goal was a symbolic moment for both the player and the club. It ended a collective goal drought for Chelsea against Premier League-level opposition that had stretched over 500 minutes.
The match also marks the first game of Calum McFarlane’s second interim stint this season, following the recent dismissal of Liam Rosenior.
McFarlane, a former academy coach who famously secured a draw against Manchester City earlier this year, seems to have unlocked a more aggressive side of Fernandez.
By pushing the midfielder higher into attacking positions, McFarlane has allowed Enzo to record his 13th goal of the season across all competitions.
As the clock ticks toward full-time at Wembley, Chelsea fans will be hoping Fernandez’s “tremendous” display is enough to secure their ticket to the FA Cup final.
