AC Milan have pulled out of a move for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
According to The Athletic, the clubs agreed a fee of more than €30 million, around £26m or $35.6m, and Mateta was set to undergo further medical tests in London on Monday after the agreement the day before.
Those checks prompted the Serie A side to abandon the deal, and other clubs are now exploring a loan for the 28-year-old before Monday night’s deadline.
Mateta has been carrying a knee problem, and Palace left him out of their FA Cup third-round loss against Macclesfield, played on a 3G surface, because of the joint.
Mateta’s failed departure will not affect Jorgen Strand Larsen’s arrival, with the Norway international’s proposed £43 million plus £5m move still on as things stand.
He has made 34 appearances for Palace this season, scoring 10 in all competitions. He was not in the squad for the 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest on Sunday, and on Friday Oliver Glasner said he was not in the right place to feature and that it was not related to a transfer.
The striker has been unsettled for some time, with contract talks ongoing since before summer 2024 to extend a deal that had entered its final 18 months.
He joined from Mainz in 2022 and has appeared 186 times for the club, recording 56 goals and 13 assists, and helped the side win the FA Cup last season.
