Adrian Ropotan says he was on Benfica’s radar but only discovered the interest after ending his playing career. The former Romanian midfielder retired in 2019, aged 33.
"After I retired, I learned of teams that had fought to sign me," he told Fanatik Dinamo.
"We are talking about Werder Bremen, we are talking about Benfica. There are reports that prove it."
"On a television programme they showed me a very big Benfica dossier. It specified clearly how I played, what I did, how I slept. They had all the data, I think they even knew what I ate."
He said the episode dated to 2006/07, when Benfica faced Dinamo Bucharest in the UEFA Cup. Scouts had travelled to watch a team-mate, then were impressed by him. Benfica made an offer of three million euros, but the transfer never went through.
