With Nathaniel Brown, FC Bayern has significantly bolstered its left side of the defense. But what does this multi-million transfer mean for Alphonso Davies?

FC Bayern is set to sign Nathaniel Brown, one of the most sought-after German defenders, and will pay at least 50 million euros for him. This raises the question of what impact the transfer will have on Alphonso Davies.

According to information from BILD soccer editor Christian Falk, the decision has been made. Reportedly, Davies still firmly plans to stay in Munich—and FC Bayern, too, does not necessarily want to let the Canadian go, despite the competition for his position.

Although officials at Säbener Straße are said to have deliberately bolstered the left side of the defense due to the 25-year-old’s injury history, there are no fundamental internal doubts about Davies’s athletic abilities.

Rather, Brown is said to have been signed because Bayern are convinced of his potential and wanted to prevent a top Premier League club from securing the services of the German international.

Brown is expected to complement Davies—not replace him

From a sporting perspective, the Munich club sees plenty of opportunities to deploy both players. In a season with up to 50 competitive matches, both Brown and Davies are likely to get ample playing time. Added to this is their flexibility: Davies can also be deployed on the left attacking wing, while Brown can play further up the field as well as on the right side of defense.

As things stand, selling Davies is therefore not on the table. According to Falk, Bayern would only be open to discussions if an exceptionally high offer were made. However, this would also require the Canadian himself to agree to a transfer.

At the moment, however, there is little to suggest that Brown’s transfer marks the beginning of Davies’ departure. Instead, Munich apparently plans to rely on both players and aims to significantly boost the quality on the left side in the future.
