The Bournemouth star has long been linked with a possible transfer to Anfield having shone since arriving in the Premier League from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2023.

Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Real Madrid are among the other heavyweight clubs to be mentioned in connection with Kerkez over recent months, with Manchester United previously thought to be Liverpool’s main rivals for his services until signing Danish international Patrick Dorgu from Lecce in January to fill their left-back void amid Luke Shaw’s ongoing injury layoff.

Liverpool now look to be the main players in the race for Kerkez, with The I reporting on Thursday that he is their preferred long-term successor to left-back stalwart Andy Robertson and that contact has now been made with both the player’s representatives and Bournemouth, who value him at around the £40million mark.

It is said that Kerkez had initially been shortlisted alongside Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes, who kept Mohamed Salah quiet during PSG’s recent Champions League last-16 win at Anfield, plus Ajax’s Jorrel Hato. Liverpool are also said to be keen on Kerkez’s fellow Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen.

And Liverpool fans cannot help but to have noticed that gathering momentum over a potential switch to Merseyside for Kerkez has been accompanied by the player himself posting an intriguing choice of picture on social media on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old is currently away on international duty with Hungary as they try to avoid relegation from the top tier of the Nations League with a two-legged play-off tie against League B promotion hopefuls Turkey, the first leg of which is on Thursday evening in Istanbul.

And Kerkez generated more excitement among the Liverpool fanbase by posting a picture on his official Instagram account from training that included only himself and team-mate Dominik Szoboszlai, an integral member of the first team at Anfield under Arne Slot.

One supporter wrote: “Agent szobo... we’re waiting [for] you Kerkez.”

Another said: “Agent Szoboszlai... bring the boy home.”

A different Liverpool fan wrote: “Yesss, it’s a code.”
