Ahead of the Super Cup showdown: Kovac issues a challenge to Bayern | OneFootball

FC Bayern Munich will face Borussia Dortmund on the road in the Super Cup on August 22. The first title of the new season will be decided at Signal Iduna Park. And BVB has set its sights high for this matchup. 

The Black and Yellows finished as runners-up last season and, despite some rather mixed performances at times, managed to stay reasonably close to FC Bayern.

This summer, BVB made changes to its roster. Young, hungry players were brought in, and the squad looks promising—especially if the club manages to put its remaining plans into action.

Niko Kovac, Dortmund’s coach, has requested additional transfers, which are likely to be granted.

Kovac wants to win the Super Cup against Bayern

After the season-opening friendly against AS Roma (2–2), the BVB coach also spoke about the upcoming Super Cup and set ambitious goals.

After the match against the Italians, Kovac didn’t want to downplay the importance of the game: “I say it again and again: This is about a title. That might not be what everyone wants to hear, but it’s true. We’re athletes; there’s a trophy at stake, and we’re determined to win this game. Bayern wants to win it, too.”

The runner-up’s goal is clear: they want to win the game. “I know how great it feels to win a Super Cup like this. If you don’t win it, everyone gets upset and complains. We want to take this very seriously and win the home game as well,” Kovac reiterated.

By then, following transfers like those of Joane Gadou and Konstantinos Karetsas, the Black-and-Yellows are hoping to have Giannis Konstantelias and Joey Veerman—their two current top transfer targets—on the roster as well. At FC Bayern, the players who had a long World Cup break—namely Michael Olise, Harry Kane, and Dayot Upamecano—are expected to be back in the lineup.
